WELCOME TO THE
UEFA SUPER CUP
UEFA SUPER CUP’A HOŞ GELDINIZ
A new European club competition season creates great anticipation, and the UEFA Super Cup match is always a special event, because it heralds the start of what every football fan hopes will be a memorable and fascinating campaign. On behalf of UEFA, I am pleased to welcome you to Istanbul for this season’s Super Cup encounter.
This year’s match is special for another reason, because it features two clubs from the same country. Liverpool, who clinched the UEFA Champions League title in early June, and Chelsea, winners of the UEFA Europa League trophy the previous month, meet in an all-English contest that promises much in the way of excitement and drama.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the president of the Turkish Football Federation, Nihat Özdemir, and his team for playing host to this match at the splendid Beşiktaş Park, a venue which is staging its first major European showpiece occasion. Istanbul is a football stronghold, and the Super Cup game is the latest in a long list of important matches that have graced the city, including the 2005 UEFA Champions League final and 2009 UEFA Cup final.
Good luck to the two teams as we kick off the 2019/20 season. I am sure that, like me, you are all looking forward to the action, both in Istanbul and in the coming months.
